Port Saint Joe - Brothers Osborne (20/04/18)

  • Artist: Brothers Osborne

  • Release Date: 20th April, 2018

  • Genre: Country, Rock, Pop, Blues, Americana

  • Record Label: Spinefarm Records / EMI /Universal

  • Tracks: 10

  • Website:

Recorded in a Florida beach house in the town of Port St. Joe, away from the sometimes sterile environs of the studio, this is the Maryland brothers’ second full-length offering. Raw, honest and uniquely homemade, the record was mostly captured in a series of live takes, retaining the atmospheric background noises of wind, roaring water and the excited and ‘refreshed’ encouragement of visiting Nashville friends. This unconventional location proved a perfect complement to the Brothers’ music, which instinctively bends rules and genres…

A diverse collection, ‘Port Saint Joe’ touches on half-lit drinking songs, emotive ballads, southern slow jams and roots-y rave-ups. The result is a record that's both familiar and fresh, mixing classic country touchstones with amplified guitars and memorable hooks. In short, a 10-track collection for the modern age – forward-thinking and versatile, with songs that nod to the past whilst still pushing forward into new territory.

Says guitarist John Osborne: “Every show we’ve played, every song we’ve written and every mile we’ve ridden has led to the making of this record”.

Watch out for the lovely Lucie Silvas providing backing vocals on a couple of tracks. "A Couple Wrongs Makin' It Alright" and "A Little Bit Trouble".

Home and the people who make it have captivated Lori McKenna for years. Over the last three decades, as she became a wife and mother of five, she has also emerged as one of the most respected, prolific singer-songwriters in popular music. Her 2016 release The Bird and the Rifle netted three Grammy nominations, along with Americana Music Association nods––all firsts for McKenna as an artist. Then, she made history: In 2016, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row thanks to co-writing Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and penning Tim McGraw’s no. 1 “Humble and Kind” solo. Both songs also clinched back-to-back Grammy wins for Best Country Song. In 2017, she became the Academy of Country Music’s first female Songwriter of the Year. The Tree is her much-anticipated eleventh studio album. Produced by Dave Cobb, The Tree takes one of McKenna’s signature themes––family––and builds a tapestry of experiences she has lived and overheard, been told and dreamed up, to create a stunning ode to life’s defining relationships.

High Fences - James Edwyn and The Borrowed Band (06/10/17)

  • Review By: Gary Smith (LCM)

Glasgow based Scottish Americana & Folk-Rock band James Edwyn & The Borrowed Band are certainly making waves. After the excitement and critical acclaim surrounding their debut album ‘The Tower’ in 2014, their second album ‘High Fences’ released in October 2017 certainly lives up it’s promise. It’s released on the band’s own Dead Record Collective label and is currently winning them even more attention. The band feature James Edwyn, Emma Joyce, Scott Keenan, Ronnie Gilmour, Ross McLaughlin and Neil McDonald

They thrilled at this years AMA UK conference & showcase and also performed on the main stage of the FATEA’s 30th birthday bash in Bournemouth. They have been very busy this year with a UK tour and many other successful festival appearances.

‘High Fences' is a perfect showcase of the bands unique combination of the finest melody-driven songwriting along with their trademark attention to production and arrangement. The inclusion of pedal steel and horns adding an extra dimension.

There are echoes of The Band too in the interplay and rich grooves in ‘Get Back Up’. It is a album of wonderful contrast and texture including the guitar-driven alt-country of the opening track ‘Passing San Ysidro’ , the gentle flow and reflection of ‘Pushing Statues’ through to the soulful ‘Quoting Sagan’. Soul and heart is what this album has in abundance. There is even the lovely ‘Never In A While’ which strips everything down to just James Edwyn on acoustic guitar. It perfectly suits the intimate nature of the song.

With it’s gentle melodic pop sway, ‘Starlet’ is another particular highlight of mine, with Emma Joyce’s harmony vocals adding to the rich mix. The album closes on two slow waltzers with ‘Burning Man’ and Ronnie Gilmour’s guitar playing perfectly complementing James Edwyn’s soulful and heartfelt delivery in ‘Doubts’ bringing to mind CSNY and The Eagles.

Wherever I Go - Frankie Davies (26/10/18)

Frankie Davies - Wherever I Go.jpg

Some albums perfectly capture the music of their artists. ‘Wherever I Go’ the brand new debut from Jersey born singer-songwriter Frankie Davies does just that, giving us an insight to Frankie’s journey and experiences over the past four years.

‘Wherever I Go’ is an excellent debut full of memorable Country Rock and Pop gems. Frankie is one of young fast rising star of UK Country and we can see big things for her in the future. The album was produced by Peter Waterman of Longcroft Recordings who you might remember also produced Hattie Briggs two five star rated albums.

Frankie’s journey started in 2015 when released her debut EP ‘Dancing All Night’. Critical praise and national airplay followed. 2017 took her to the home of Country music Nashville, were she started recording on her debt with renowned musicians, the back home to the UK with her all female band.

Frankie has supported a host of great US Country artists including Maddie & Tae, Chris Young, Charlie Worsham, Mo Pitney and Josh Kelley. Closer to home she has been a regular at C2C, toured with The Shires and supported Ward Thomas. Frankie completed her first headline tour in 2017.

Frankie comments ‘In one sense this album is a showcase of lessons learned from my beginnings and being young and naive in the music industry. From the rocker ‘You Don’t Know Me’ written by Emily Linden, where I let my frustration pour out, to the contrasting ‘Front Row Seat’. The latter song is about an experience that broke me. I had been led to believe that a show I had been booked for would suddenly change my life. When it came to showtime there was only one person in the audience”.

This confrontation with a harsh world at a young age only pushed Frankie forward and adds a grit to her songwriting as well as moments of heart-breaking honesty.

“I went out and from my disappointment and discovered something truly valuable. Even if there is one person to listen to my music, they deserve my performance. I am always grateful to anyone who wants to listen”.

As an homage to the origin of his story and how far he’s come, the soul-baring album takes its name from the street Allen grew up on and pays tribute to the influence home and family has had on his incredible journey. Fans will instantly receive six songs with a pre-order of ‘Mercury Lane’, including “Best Shot,” “Underdogs,” “21,” “Warrior,” “Back of Your Mind” and “Make Me Want To,” a brand-new track that highlights the singer’s hopeless romantic side.

“Mercury Lane is where my journey began. All of the fundamental life lessons that shaped my values and make me who I am today, I was taught on that street—it’s where I learned about love, family, life, how to believe in myself, the concept of never giving up, following your dreams and being a good person,” said Jimmie Allen. “This album touches on all of those ideals and truly feels like I’m sharing a piece of my heart with the world. I’ve been working toward this moment for so long; I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

‘Mercury Lane’ comes nearly one year to the day after Allen quietly dropped his self-titled EP which earned him recognition on a slew of “Artist to Watch” titles. Now with his debut single, “Best Shot” rocketing up the charts (currently Top 20), with more than 38 million streams to date, Jimmie has become one of the most buzzed about Country newcomers and is slated to make his national US TV debut next month on NBC’s TODAY. Fans have gone rabid for Allen’s undeniable talent and incredible story of perseverance and positivity, as depicted in his docu-series “Jimmie Allen All In.”

For months Jimmie Allen fans had been teased with the promise of a full-length album; hoping to satiate the craving for new music, the critically-acclaimed rising star had been sharing one brand-new track each month as a collection of songs he calls the “Slower Lower Sessions.” The series, inspired by the ‘Slower Lower’ region of the state, held fans off temporarily but it is clear that after teasing ‘Mercury Lane’ details on his Instagram story earlier this week, people are excited for more Jimmie Allen.

Desperate Man - Eric Church (05/10/18)

  • Release Date: 5th October, 2018

  • Genre: Country, Country Rock

  • Record Label: Spinefarm Records

In a video message speaking directly to his fans, 2 x CMA ‘Album of the Year’ winner and 7-time Grammy nominee Eric Church told his faithful Church Choir [Church’s official fan club]: "It’s been a while, I just want to say I have missed you. I have good news…the album is done, and we are back. It’s called ‘Desperate Man’ and the first single is called ‘Desperate Man’."

‘Desperate Man’ is the latest and sixth studio album from one of country music’s premier names and biggest, most respected stars; an artist whose ground-breaking 2014 outing, ‘The Outsiders’, a chart-topper in the US and the biggest selling country album of that year, paved the way for the rock country blend that is such a rich seam today.

Eric has long maintained that putting music into specific genres is an outmoded concept, and ‘Desperate Man’ (11 tracks tellingly overseen by regular producer Jay Joyce) is further proof of EC’s broad range of influences – from rock and metal acts through to Hank Williams Jr. and Ray Wylie Hubbard, the latter getting a co-writing credit on the new album’s lead single and title track.

In 2015, Eric Church stunned industry and fans alike with the surprise release of ‘Mr. Misunderstood’ (the album), giving it to his fans first without interviews, hype or promotion. Church Choir members spoke directly to local television on how they received the record, being the first to confirm its existence. Church commented, "Everyone is so focused on your first week. But I am more concerned with week 80 than week one."

‘Mr. Misunderstood’ went on to win ‘Album of the Year’ at the CMA Awards in 2016, reaching RIAA-Platinum certification earlier this year.

Given Eric’s revered status and record-breaking stats, ‘Desperate Man’ (the album) could have been a collection of slickly-crafted stadium anthems, but instead of going down that pyro-laced path, the end result, very much a body of work, spotlights Eric as a thoughtful artist fuelled by emotion, feel and the desire to tell a story; a family man cast in the great American song-writing tradition, bringing to mind names like Springsteen, Seger and Jackson Browne; a musician whose substantial success hasn’t detracted from his ability to both talk from the heart and shoot from the hip. In short, an album for our (desperate) times."

From the riotous, harmony-soaked “Got My Name Changed Back,” to the ironic and poignant “Best Years of My Life,” the album spotlights the trio’s emphasis on classic-country storytelling from a modern female perspective.
