Selma Avenue - Troubadour 77

Troubadour 77 - Selma Avenue.jpg

  • Release Date: 1st December, 2017
  • Genre: Rock, Alt Country, Indie

  • Website: http://troubadour77.com/

To quote a Troubadour 77 song, “I guess we’ll never know how the story could’ve read, cause we can’t go back again, to 1977.”  Or can we?  Forty years later there is one band boldly leading the charge and taking fans back to the Rock n’ Roll, California Country and Singer-Songwriter roots of the 1970s.  T77, has listened to the generation raised on great melodies, lyrics and records, and agree with them that there is an under-served population of music lovers who are ripe to hear some new original music that can live beside the nostalgic tunes spinning in an endless loop on their favorite classic rock satellite radio stations or streaming playlists. The time has come to deliver songs that address the life circumstances, social issues and perspectives of an older and wiser generation of music lovers.

The band is the brainchild of Grammy award-winning singer-songwriters, Anna Wilson (Piano/Lead Vocals) and Monty Powell (Electric Guitar/Vocals).  Wilson and Powell have been married for 16 years, making music together as artists, songwriters and producers in Nashville.  Collectively they have written a dozen #1 songs and countless album cuts that appear on over 70 million records sold and have co-produced unique special projects that pay tribute to The Eagles, Billy Joel and the Countrypolitan era of music.  Additionally, Powell was a key creative force in establishing the mega success story of Keith Urban.  He was his early producer and one of Urban’s top collaborators for many years, earning Golden Globe nominations and countless industry awards for the songs they composed. Ultimately, Wilson and Powell spent 25 years in Music City together, but it wasn’t until after breaking away and retreating to their second home in the Utah mountains that they found a new muse that came calling so strong, they had to answer.

The songs of Troubadour 77 are written by Wilson and Powell and recorded in their world-class studio in Utah.  It all started when Wilson began revisiting the records of Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Firefall, Linda Ronstadt and many others, and realized how much she missed someone just singing her a great song. Wilson states, “Those artists made music that was authentic and addressed the issues of the times, and yet all those songs still hold up 40 years later because they are honest and real.  It’s the type of music I’ve always wanted to write and record as an artist but the industry would not allow.  Today, of course, we can take our music directly to the fans. I used to think I was just born 20 years too late because I wasn’t in Los Angeles in 1975.  I was just 5 years old singing in my room in Pennsylvania into my hairbrush.  But now I think perhaps it’s not too late, and it's worth it to attempt to carry the torch of that great era of music, so that's what I am going to do.”

Powell chimes in, “With all the new ways to discover music, you can go find your true believers.  We figured if we love that classic sound but don’t just want to hear Stairway to Heaven for the ten-thousandth time, there’s probably a whole lot of other folks out there who would love to hear some fresh tunes not dominated by kid singers, hip-hop based rhythms and soundscapes with cultural themes that just don’t match who they are.  Troubadour 77 is here to say it can be done."

Joined by their band mates, Austin Weyand (Guitar/Vocals), Kassie Weyand (Bass/Vocals) and Nathan Chappell (Drums), the band hails from Salt Lake City.  In an interesting twist, Austin and Kassie have also been married for 15 years and making music together.  Austin, originally from western Pennsylvania, is a premiere finger style guitar player who has recorded two solo albums and is the 2014 champion of the Wyoming finger style guitar competition, and also holds the same title in Utah from 2012.  His wife Kassie, from Honeyville, Utah, began playing the piano at a young age (5), and was very involved in theater and dance during her teenage and young adult years.  After getting married she picked up the bass and began to perform with Austin and they forged a duo.  Powell says, “When we met Austin we knew he was something special.  Then he told us his wife played bass and Anna and I said, bring her over and lets jam.” Needless to say, Wilson & Powell were thrilled to have them join the band.  Powell often jokes, “Yes, we are two married couples in a band together, like Fleetwood Mac, without the drugs and affairs.”

On drums is Nathan Chappell, a Native American from the Hopi tribe who grew up in Brigham City, Utah.  He started playing drums at thirteen (1977) and later joined the Marine Corps at seventeen.  He served for four years, and afterwards decided to take the leap and pursue his first love...music...as a full time musician.  In addition to his role in T77, he is a drum instructor for two private music schools, facilitates drum workshops for various after school and library arts programs and is a world-class cajone player, which is a skill all in itself.

Music, and making music, is not just for the young, although you would be hard pressed to know that by what is regularly turned out by the music giants.  In fact, instead of an explicit language sticker, T77 says with tongue firmly in cheek, that they label their music as “not suitable for anyone under the age of 35”. Wilson says, “It’s high time artists start making new music for adults as well as kids.  Yes, dare I say songs you can understand the words to and make you reflect and celebrate your place in life, without relying entirely on the nostalgia of a bygone era.  We just want to carry on the great music made in the 70s.  Back then artists weren't afraid to write and sing protest songs, and neither are we.  We've got some songs that reflect the current issues and the times we're in now and we hope they can affect change in our world in a positive way.  We’ve also got songs about getting older, as well as looking back. I think artists should make music that addresses those parts of the journey too.”

Troubadour 77 is just getting started.  Their debut was an appearance with Brandi Carlile at the 2017 Sundance Film Fest, and now they will be kicking off their summer tour at this year’s star studded BottleRock Festival in Napa as well as performing additional concerts with Los Lobos and Robert Randolph and The Family Band later in the season.  T77 is giving listeners a chance to rediscover that sense of wonder and connection, when you heard someone singing TO you, FOR you, ABOUT you and in some mystical way, WITH you.  Make room on your playlist for Troubadour 77…new music with a classic sound!

Tyminski - Southern Gothic (20/10/17)

  • Review By: Gary Smith (LCM)

With a musical career has spanning over three decades it is always very exciting when Dan Tyminski releases new material. Now, the Vermont-born singer-songwriter is releasing his excellent solo 13-track album 'Southern Gothic' through Decca (UMC) under a solitary moniker ‘Tyminski’. Dan is very well know for being part of Alison Krauss' supergroup Union Station, the singing voice of George Clooney in 'Oh Brother' and provided the vocals on EDM artist Avicii's global smash "Hey Brother." He is also a superb singer-songwriter in his own right.

The new album sees Dan mixing his roots music pedigree with a wide range of contemporary influences on 13 songs he co-wrote with some of country's best and brightest talents. Many of the songs were inspired by what Dan describes as his perceptions of "light and dark" and originally written for other artists, though he ultimately decided to record them himself. Co-writers on Southern Gothic include Sarah Buxton, Jesse Frasure, Ashley Monroe, Josh Kear and the late Andrew Dorff.

Ready The Horses - Jarrod Dickenson (29/09/17)

Jarrod Dickenson - Ready-The-Horses-packshot.jpg

Storytelling is something of a Texas tradition. Tall hats and even taller tales are woven into the fabric of The Lone Star State, and singer-songwriter, Jarrod Dickenson can spin a yarn with the best of them. Hailing from Waco, now based in Nashville, Jarrod spends most of his time on the road bringing his own particular brand of soulful Americana to a wide variety of music loving audiences around the globe.

Jarrod's critically acclaimed album 'The Lonesome Traveler' and his subsequent EP 'Songs From Willow St' paved the way for him to tour the UK, Ireland and Europe extensively over the last several years. Breakout performances at Glastonbury and Larmer Tree Festival, along with recent tours supporting legendary artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Don McLean, The Waterboys and Jools Holland have earned Jarrod a formidable and loyal fan base across the globe, including BBC radio hosts Dermot O'Leary, Cerys Matthews, Huey Morgan, Janice Long, Robert Elms and Alex Lester.

All tracks on the album were recorded with the core band live onto 2” tape, with Jarrod recalling, “I've found that getting a group of musicians all together in the same room, and playing the songs live allows you to capture the energy and feel of a live performance, because it's just that; a performance. You feed off each other, and create a much more honest and meaningful thing in my opinion. Recording to tape produces that warm sound we all love, but also affords you less room for error. I think it forces you to give each take your all. "

Tx Jelly - The Texas Gentlemen (15/09/17)

  • Artist: The Texas Gentleman
  • Genre: Country, Rock, Soul and Funk
  • Release Date: 15th September, 2017
  • Record Label: New West Records
  • Tracks: 11
  • Website: https://www.thetexasgentlemen.com

Sometimes, authenticity can sneak up on you. The first sounds you hear on The Texas Gentlemen’s debut studio album, 'TX Jelly', is that of a band slowly coming together.

It’s deceptive, because it creates the impression these Gentlemen might be hesitant about their first record, but any hint of uncertainty vanishes as the core quintet, Beau Bedford, Nik Lee, Daniel Creamer, Matt McDonald and Ryan Ake tears into the opening track, Habbie Doobie, a low-slung piece of vintage country-funk that slams out of the speakers and announces The Texas Gentlemen as a force to be reckoned with.

This Lone Star-bred collective takes its cues from some of the iconic acts of the past — the quicksilver brilliance of The Wrecking Crew, The Muscle Shoals Swampers (who backed everyone from Aretha to Wilson Pickett), Booker T. and The M.G.’s, and Bob Dylan’s one-time backers The Band are the most obvious examples. Bedford, who shares chief engineering and producing responsibilities at Dallas’ Modern Electric Sound Recorders, assembled The Texas Gentlemen as an all-purpose backing band for an eclectic array of singer-songwriters, including Leon Bridges, Nikki Lane, and more.

In 2016, the Gentlemen were lured out of the studio to the Newport Folk Festival, where they were joined by iconic troubadour Kris Kristofferson, making his first Newport appearance in more than 45 years. Rolling Stone called it one of the festival’s “most exciting sets.”

Kristofferson so enjoyed collaborating with The Texas Gentlemen that he enlisted them to reprise their roles in a series of critically acclaimed Texas concerts. Of Kristofferson and The Texas Gentlemen’s appearance at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, music critic Preston Jones wrote “The [instruments] would slowly coalesce around Kristofferson’s gnarled but still potent voice, creating an electric sensation of the past fusing with the present.”

That deft fusion of before and right now is possible thanks to the musicians’ unswerving dedication to simply playing to the best of their abilities, trusting their instincts, and letting the music guide them. Case in point: TX Jelly was created in less than a week — four days, start to finish — at Muscle Shoals’ singular FAME Studios.

Pared down from the 28 songs the Gentlemen recorded in that 96-hour span, TX Jelly effortlessly connects way back to what’s next, summoning the spirits of American songcraft even as it heralds the arrival of 21st century talent. Cut live, with little use for the blinding polish and careful presentation of so much modern music, TX Jelly oozes with skill backed up by that hard-won authenticity.

TX Jelly moves between contemplative and raucous, encompassing the full breadth of the American experience. The music touches on blues, soul, folk, country, rock and gospel — from first track to last, you can feel The Texas Gentlemen reaching deep inside themselves and finding what’s genuine — what illuminates the truth of the country’s rich, complicated and singular artistic history — and delivering it the only way they know how: real, raw and righteous.

Elles Bailey - Wildfire (01/09/17)

  • Artist: Elles Bailey
  • Genre: Blues, Country
  • Release Date: 1st September, 2017
  • Record Label: Outlaw Music
  • Tracks: 12

Bristol based Elles Bailey (28) seamlessly weaves rootsy blues, country and soulful rock with a contemporary edge and her trademark ‘smoky vocals’ taking the lead. Her husky toned, lived-in voice sounds like she has a 60-a-day habit, but was actually caused by a serious illness when she was three. Her two EP's, both produced by Brian Banks, (Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie) 'Who I Am To Me' (Feb 2015) and 'The Elberton Sessions' (Oct 2016) were released to critical acclaim, and her debut album is set to drop Spring 2017.

No stranger to the scene, over the last three years, this captivating, hardworking songstress and her talented band have built up a loyal all-age fan base through relentless touring, through both the UK and Europe. She’s opened for acts like Wille & The Bandits and shared festival line-ups with Lisa Simone, The Mystery Jets & Wilko Johnson. Elles has just finished recording her debut record, at Blackbird studios in Nashville which has played hosts to artists such as Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon and Chris Stapleton to name but a few. Produced by Brad Nowell, the album features world-renowned country and blues musicians, including Grammy Award winner and a two-time winner of the CMA ‘Musician of the Year’ Brent Mason on guitar, pianist Bobby Wood ‘Musician Hall Of Famer’ 3 Times Over and more. One of the tracks on the record has been co-written with Ivor Novello Award writer Roger Cook. ‘Wildfire’ penned by Elles & Joe Wilkins (Elles touring band) will be the first single from the record. In fact, 2017 looks set to be a very busy year for Elles with over 30 dates scheduled in the run up to her debut album release in April. Her festival diary is also filling up very quickly. Elles will feature at The Great British Rock and Blues Festival in Skegness and will be opening for soul singer Jo Harman on her February tour before heading back into Europe in Spring 2017. Like many artists today, Elles is breaking down the barriers of traditional genres, taking inspiration from many and fusing them together to bring you her own unique sound, which is earning her a legion of devoted fans, young and old, from across the UK and further afield.

'Gritty, southern, smoky vocals that have a real bluesy/country feel to them' (Maverick Magazine)

'One to watch for 2017' (Country Music Magazine)

'A Great Voice' (BBC 6 Music)

'Elles voice just keeps getting better" (Richard Pitt - BBC Introducing in the West)

'Elles Bailey gave it all, the complete package, energy, swagger and soul, whilst her band matched her passion and drive laying down hook after hook. Blues Princess, maybe, but with performances like this Elles will soon be taking the throne by storm' (Blues in Britain)

Under Blues Skies - CALICO the band (15/09/17)

  • Artist: CALICO the band
  • Genre: Country, Americana
  • Release Date: 15th September, 2017
  • Record Label: California Country Records
  • Tracks: 13
  • Website: https://www.calicotheband.com/

Calico are a Californian Americana Country group led by the female duo of Manda Mosher and Kirsten Proffit, who are known for their signature intimate and tight harmonies. They are a California band in the deepest, most natural sense of the term, their name is shorthand for California country. Their music echoes what Gram Parsons famously dubbed 'Cosmic American Music'. The sound and feel of 'Under Blue Skies' is inspired by the duo’s shared love of Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Eagles, the Everly Brothers, Fleetwood Mac and of course the Beatles. Their songwriting touchstones also includes Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, The Band and Tom Petty. Manda and Kirsten feel so connected to this classic and timeless music, that they’re able to bring it into the present tense and make it their own.

“Because we’ve spent so much time together, we feel more comfortable expressing vulnerability in the lyrics; there are definitely more love songs. There’s certainly meaning to our debut album 'Rancho California', but it’s more broad strokes; on Under Blue Skies, we were able to dig in and get more personal.” comments Manda.

Beginnings - Hannah's Yard (12/05/17)

  • Artist: Hannah's Yard
  • Genre: Pop, Jazz, Folk, Country
  • Release Date: 12th May, 2017
  • Record Label: Superphonix Limited
  • Tracks: 14
  • Website: https://www.hannahsyard.com

We head to Buckinghamshire for our next excellent young LCM featured artist. At the beating heart of the musical collective known as 'Hannah’s Yard' lies the beautifully understated voice of 21 year old singer Hannah Layton Turner. Think Nora Jones with touches of Katie Melua. The band's music is on the acoustic pop side with a heady fusion of Jazz, Folk and Country. Their debut album ‘Beginnings’ was released on 12 May 2017 and features 14 songs recorded in Hannah’s home town of Olney (not far from Milton Keynes)…the small English town where ‘Amazing Grace’ was written in the 1770s. This wonderful collection of meaningful songs about life and love includes a recording of Hannah at just 15 years of age, when she first met fellow musicians Barnaby Pinny and James Reader.

An upload of the collective’s song and our LCM #TrackOfTheDay 'Why Would I Know' to the BBC Introducing website in September 2015, resulted in a first national radio play on Mark Forrest’s BBC Introducing show the following November. Local station BBC Three Counties Radio immediately awarded the song ‘Introducing Track of the Week’ resulting in cross-station airplay and invitations to perform live on the station.

An official launch of the song was expedited and by February 2016, following a live performance on his BBC Radio Oxford show, Alex Lester played ‘Why Would I Know’ on his Radio Two programme. Hannah’s Yard went on to appear on Robert Elms’ BBC Radio London show at the end of February marking a remarkable six months of progress for Hannah and her musicians.

Excitingly the band supported Gordon Haskell on his UK tour earlier this year.

Kenny Foster - Deep Cuts (17/04/17)

  • Artist: Kenny Foster
  • Genre: Country, Americana, Roots, Rock
  • Release Date: 17th April, 2017
  • Record Label: Kenny Foster
  • Tracks: 12
  • Website: https://kennyfostermusic.com/

While Kenny Foster isn’t exactly ‘new’ to country music, the momentum behind the unmistakable balladeer’s 2017 release ‘Deep Cuts’ has a host of new fans flocking to the raw grit and brutal honesty of Foster’s remarkably mature, thoughtful and unapologetic songwriting. Lush with real instruments, astute observations and the deconstruction of one man’s head and heart, Foster has built a monument to the American experience that seeks to universalize the specific, and embody the very specific ways that we are all very much the same. While the pop-laden sounds of country radio have been trending away from the genre’s organic roots in recent times, Foster makes a case for preserving the foundations of country music while still allowing it the chance to comment on and even pine over the ever-evolving landscape.

Authentic. Accessible. This timeless collection of songs will echo through the annuls of the story that birthed a great American tradition, and gave words to a nation seeking to reflect its own identity. A welcomed ‘new’ voice may just have us longing for our past, and at the same time, looking ahead at how we will preserve what has always been good, and right, and true.

Foster has shared the stage with artists including Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Brothers Osborne, Old Dominion, Lady Antebellum, Marc Broussard, Butch Walker, Buddy Miller and countless others, along with multiple appearances at the ACM and CMA music festivals. He has received press in Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Washington Post and Forbes - who referred to him as a 'country music superstar.' He has been featured in two Super Bowl commercials with Sheryl Crow and Danica Patrick, respectively, and has appeared in numerous episodes of ABC's ‘Nashville’ and had songs placed in ‘Extreme Home Makeover’ and ‘Boston Med’, along with videos featured on national US music channels CMT and GAC.

‘Deep Cuts’ is out now worldwide, and Kenny Foster is on tour in the UK/Ireland later this month.

Hannah Johnson - Shaken (10/07/17)

  • Artist: Hannah Johnson
  • Genre: Country, Blues
  • Release Date: 10th July, 2017
  • Record Label: Wood Ville Music
  • Tracks: 11
  • Website: http://hjbrokenhearts.com/

The album was recorded at The Ameripolitan Studios in Austin, Texas. It features some of Hannah's favourite musicians including Stewart Johnson, Bryce Clarke, Chris Shirley, Beth Chrisman, Joshua Hoag, Emily Gimble, Tom Lewis, Sophia Johnson, Brian Kremer and Devin Jake.

Hannah delves deep into her influences of old country, the blues and honky tonk music. The choice of material is imperative to Hannah, who has spent a long time studying the vocal styles of country greats such as Faron Young, George Jones & Ray Price.

At a time when it is fashionably cool to be “Americana” and dressing “vintage” is de rigueur, it is easy to feel tired of the cliches around the modern country scene. Much of the music coming out of Nashville today seems to be either watered down country pop, or stylistically affected Americana with chanted choruses and stomping bass drums.

However, there is also reaction against these extreme ends of the industry machine and artists like Hannah Johnson are approaching their music with a refreshing honesty and commitment to the core principles of ‘old’ country music, celebrating the heritage and history rather than diluting it. Undoubtedly spending so much time in Austin, Texas has influenced her immensely, as the music she is making falls much more under the bracket of what Dale Watson is doing with his “Ameripolitan” genre than the new country from Nashville. Hannah sings classic country songs about drinking and heart ache straight from a Honky Tonk, her sultry and smokey voice taking on the likes of Patsy Cline, Skeets McDonald and Willie Nelson. But what also cannot be ignored in her voice is the strong influence from the blues, as exemplified on her cover of an old Charlie Patton number and her powerful rendition of ‘Trouble In Mind’.

The stand out tracks however, are her own compositions, ‘Your Girlfriend Hates Me’ could perhaps be seen as a modern, less aggressive take on Loretta’s “fist city”, clearly placing relationships between women at the centre of her experience, and proving not always easy being the only girl in the band. ‘Morning Cocktail’ then takes her in a more soulful and reflective direction, lamenting a highly destructive lost love, the dangerous numbing qualities of alcohol, while demonstrating her vocal prowess. ‘Nowhere Train’ immediately hits an infectious country groove, delivering classic twangy telecaster and providing a strong catchy chorus as the album’s opener.

Hannah's fans include Imelda May, Robert Plant and Ronnie Wood, indeed Hannah and her band provided the entertainment for Ronnie’s recent 70th Birthday party. She is set to spend the summer 2017 gigging and promoting her record in Austin, TX.

Sam Outlaw - Tenderheart (14/04/17)

"There's a tender heart beating for you..."

Cynicism comes easy, but having a soft heart takes real guts. Sam Outlaw's new album 'Tenderheart' dares to tread gently and look inward, with unapologetic sentiment and  nods to country music's greatest neon rainbow chasers.

Since the release of his 2015 debut 'Angeleno', Sam Outlaw remains one of LA's only modern country singers to earn international acclaim. And with his follow-up 'Tenderheart' he shows an impressive refinement of his artistic identity. Sonically, the album further elaborates Outlaw's "SoCal Country" sound: a sun-bleached, Baja-influenced twang that deftly points to country's neo-traditionalists and LA's legendary singer-songwriters. Thematically 'Tenderheart' is a thesis on self-discovery and the power of love - a course set with the opening chords of "Everyone's Looking For Home." The opening track is a cinematic, mariachi-laced meditation on Outlaw's own conflicted quest for peace among the chaos of his chosen path.

Over the course of these thirteen songs it becomes increasingly apparent why his clever intertwining of country tropes and crisp modernism has so impressed country music fans, critics and songwriters alike. (Alt-country pioneer Ryan Adams just recently praised Outlaw, calling his work "beyond great songwriting".)

Not one to mess with a winning combination, Sam called on many of the same musicians that made 'Angeleno' such a success: harmony singer Molly Jenson, pedal steel pro Jeremy Long and guitarist Danny Garcia, along with Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) and Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket). Produced by Martin Pradler and Outlaw and recorded in the San Fernando Valley, 'Tenderheart' also features Erwin Vasquez and Mariachi Teocuitatlan, a local mariachi group who appeared in the video for 'Angeleno's' title track.

Now two years into his new life, Outlaw has learned that great dreams can only be achieved at great cost. And at its core, 'Tenderheart; is the outcome of another lesson learned: if your heart stays true, the sacrifice is worth it.
