We are big fans of West Texas native Aaron Watson and his last album ‘Vaquero’, so we were very excited to review his brand new album ‘Red Bandana’. Very rare for modern Country music, all twenty new tracks are written by Aaron himself and he comments that it’s ‘an album I've been working towards my entire career. There are 20 songs and they represent each of the 20 years I've been blessed to play shows and make country music'.

This is an excellent album with wonderful songwriting and arrangements from one of the hardest working independent Country artists in the US. Highlights include ‘Ghost of Guy Clark’, ‘Dark Horse’, ‘Old Friend’ and ‘Riding With Red’. But the entire album is very strong and you can probably find your own personal favourites. Every track of this super album is also underpinned by strong narrative storytelling.

Smith and McClennan - Small Town Stories (15/11/19)

Smith & McClennan - Small Town.jpg

  • Release Date: 15th November 2020

  • Genre: Folk, Americana

  • Record Label: White Fall Records

  • Tracks:10

  • Website: https://smithandmcclennan.com/

Small Town Stories is the stunning debut album by husband-and-wife duo Emily Smith and Jamie McClennan, its ten tracks drawing on the couple's shared life in rural south-west Scotland. It's an intimate, uplifting and intensely beautiful record, reflecting the pair's deep-seated affiliation with American roots music. Influences include classic harmony duos The Civil Wars and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, as well as stalwart Nashville singer-songwriters such as Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Darrell Scott and Kacey Musgraves.

Produced by Ross Hamilton (Mark Lanegan, Isobel Campbell, Texas, Wolfstone) at Rocket Science in Glasgow, and mastered in Nashville, the album features eight original songs written by Jamie McClennan, the New Zealand-born fiddle player and guitarist, as well as a cover of Willow Macky's Sixties peace anthem, 'Better Than War', and a stirring new arrangement of the traditional broadside ballad, 'Sailin's A Weary Life'. Front and centre is Emily’s voice, an instrument of remarkable purity, capable of conveying the full spectrum of emotions on an album which tackles the universal themes of parenthood, addiction, separation, war, childhood, love and loss. Small Town Stories is the high point of a musical partnership which has developed over almost 20 years. A hugely respected figure on the international folk scene,

Emily Smith is a former BBC Young Traditional Musician of the year, has twice been Scots Singer of the Year, received two BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominations and has released eight acclaimed solo albums of traditional music. McClennan has played in his wife's band for 17 years, as well as performing with numerous other artists.

  • Review By: Gary Smith (LCM)

Since first being introduced to each other by Joan Armatrading at an industry showcase in 2015, Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer have been making great progress on the UK Folk and Americana world. ‘Another Shade Of Smith And Brewer’ sees Ben and Jimmy creating a full band sound for their first studio album. Ben was also recently nominated in the AMA UK awards held at the Troxy in London.

We have known Ben and Jimmy for a while now and it has been very exciting to follow their musical journey. We are thrilled that LCM gave them their first duo gig after that famous meeting with Joan. They were supporting Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby along with Marina Florance at the historic St Pancras Old Church in London. A gig that was recorded and later made into a successful live album by Cathryn and Brian.

Many of tracks on Ben and Jimmy’s debut album have a real classic and classy feel with echoes of the Everly Brothers, Allman Brothers, Milk Carton Kids and Simon & Garfunkle. Their guitar playing positively sparkles along with their trademark close layered harmonies. The addition of Eric Lavansch’s drums and Tom Sinnett’s bass adds another dimension to Ben and Jimmy’s songs leading to more richness, depth, and variety.

The album begins with one of my favourite S&B tracks the lovely ‘Isabella’. It’s full of excellent guitar finger-picking and interlocking layered harmonies. The newly expanded band sound is introduced on the second and title track ‘Another Shade Of Blue’ with it’s gentle muted drums and percussion. This continues to build in the next track. the positive and life-affirming ‘Life’s Too Short’ which is an energetic retro rockabilly stomp, with an Allman Brothers vibe. ‘Favourite Photography’ slows the pace slightly into a lovely slice of 70’s US folk-rock

There is a strong sense of reflection and self-deprecation in the very tender ‘Better Than Your Father’, imparting parental wisdom and experience to the next generation. ‘Blow Wind Blow’ takes us into Everly Brothers territory. It’s smooth shuffling beat complementing the shift between standard verse and falsetto chorus. A wonderful head verses heart song. Self-reflection and being an undeserving recipient of love is the central theme of the lovely ‘Better Man’. We love the high tempo, toe-tapping and fun ‘Don’t Say You Don’t Love Me’ with its African inspired percussion and rhythms. It would be perfectly at home on Paul’s Simon’s iconic Graceland album. On ‘Julietta’ fluid guitar interplay and occasional staccato weave over a fast-rolling and catchy bassline. Some skilled twin guitar solos here showcasing their prowess. Next up is the punchy ‘Love You Forever’ with it’s brushed percussion. The rocking country blues ‘Music City’ sees another shift in style. This is a clever and funny tale of the duo’s Nashville trip with excitement and frustrations discussed in equal measure. The album closes with the melancholic and laid-back ‘Lovely Day For Doing Nothing’

The album showcases the many wonderful styles of music in Ben and Jimmy’s arsenal. From the gentle slower thoughtful harmony-laden ballads through to 70’s folk-rock, Rockabilly and Country Blues Rock The future is looking very bright for this very talented duo.

Luke Jackson - Journals (08/11/19)

  • Review By: Gary Smith (LCM)

Luke is the kind of vocalist and songwriter who always creates an instant first impression. The type of artist that stops you dead in your tracks, knowing that you are listening to something very special. His fifth studio album ‘Journals’ continues his rich and exciting musical journey. At only 25 years old Luke has matured into one of the UK’s finest young singer-songwriters.

Released through his own ‘First Take’ label, ‘Journals’ sees Luke write 11 of the album’s 12 tracks, with a spine-tingling cover of Sanny Denny’s classic ‘Who Knows Where Time Goes’ added for good measure. Luke is joined on the album by former college friend Andy Sharps on bass and Elliott Norris on drums, both adding their harmony vocals. Jarrod Pinner (Gentleman Of The Few) adds impressive piano and Keyboards, while Lizzie White adds her sensitive vocals.

We love Luke’s music which blends Americana, Blues, Rock, Folk, Soul and even some Jazz. Co-produced by Luke and Kent based Dan Lucas ‘Journals’ showcases some of Luke’s best work to date from reflective moving ballads to fuller rock and blues tracks.

The word ‘journal’ is defined as ‘a record of occurrences, experiences and reflections kept on a regular basis’ and this perfectly describes the inspirations of this album. Luke comments that ‘the album was about the car journeys, the people I meet and music I listen to on the road, the endless podcasts, conversations and snapshots of other lives, landscapes and cultures.’ The album also Include on-point songs themed about modern issues both social and political.

The excellent album opens with the sultry and rich bluesy bitter-sweet ‘Honeycomb’ with it’s driving rhythm, soaring vocals from Luke and on-point harmonies from Andy and Elliott. This is followed by the heartfelt love song ‘Home’, written from a hotel room longings for home life and family. A story of hardship and reflection from frequent life on the road. We love the wonderful guitar solo and the piano interplay. ‘Aimee’ was written by Luke while travelling on a Trans-Canadian train. It’s a simple song about two people who meet briefy then go their separate ways in the morning. Beautifully paced and measured.

Along ‘with the more personal songs there is the witty ‘Cherry Picker’ the story of a farmer trying to win of the girl of his dreams by courting her with his mobile crane. There is a great retro soulful groove here, growing with propulsive rhythms, hypnotic bass and keyboard lines. The pace slows for the beautiful ‘Red Oak’ based on a true story of war, love and loss. Another lovely and thoughtful track with an initial slow tempo building into a crescendo of electric guitar and keyboards. ‘Heavy’ seeing Luke reflecting on the silent crisis of male depression. Full of impact with a retro soulful groove. “No there really ain’t no shame in being a broken man”. Wise words in a time when many men have trouble in appearing vulnerable and emotionally troubled.

Baby Boomers’ was inspired by the birth of Andy’s daughter and reflects on how the world might change in her lifetime. Luke’s personal experiences and thoughts on growing to adulthood are also included. Luke said that he channeled his inner ‘Billy Bragg’ to write the song. ‘Eliza Holt’ is a rollicking and very sad folk song. Luke previously lived in a village that grew around a 18th century psychiatric hospital, which closed in the 1990’s. As a child he would play in the graveyard. He was struck by one gravestone which read “Here lays Eliza Holt’ with others name underneath showing more than one generation had been buried there. Luke says “that he discovered that young girls which became pregnant out of wedlock would quite likely be sent to a hospital like this. Where mother and baby would spend the rest of their lives there, ending up buried together.”

The gentle ‘A Queen In Her Own Way’ is a tribute to Luke’s Grandmother. Who lovingly helps three generations of her family. Wonderful acoustic guitar interwoven with piano and gentle vocals. The Sandy Denny classic ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’ has always been very special in the folk cannon. Luke’s thoughtful and reflective new cover version is perfectly judged, highlighting Sandy’s timeless lyrics. Luke comments “It’s a joy to play such a marvelous song by someone who was a national treasure.”

‘This Ain’t Love (But It’ll Do)’ is a tongue-in-cheek look at fake love inspired by TV shows like ‘Love Island’. A tale of transient love and infatuation. The album closes with ‘Every Flame’ a defiant song about carrying on even when things get tough. Pursuing his music journey until as Luke says “I’m going to ride it, until the wheels come off’. The song ends with a strong spiritual gospel-style outro.

Journals is a wonderful chronicle of Luke’s musical journey. Mature, deep, highly crafted and highly impressive. One of my favourite albums so far this year.

  • Record Label: Silvertone

Wildwood Kin is the self-titled second studio album from the West Country trio, sisters Emillie and Beth and their cousin Meghann. Self-titled because it captures the band’s artistic vision so completely, the most striking thing about the album is just how natural it sounds. The voices of three young women harmonise effortlessly - there are shades of Simon & Garfunkel, Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac, and the churchy cadences of the first Fleet Foxes album in the beautifully gentle folk rock melodies. Lyrics address profound themes like love, loss and spirituality in an unforced fashion. Above all, there is a spirit to the record that is as wild and free as the moors that Wildwood Kin grew up on. Produced by Ian Grimble (Bear’s Den, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Viola Beach, Daughter), the album features a number of co-writes from sessions in Los Angeles, Nashville and Oxfordshire, including Gabrielle Aplin, Angelo Petraglia (Taylor Swift, Lissie, Kings of Leon), and Alex Davies (Sigrid, Birdy, Kodaline). Lead single, ‘Never Alone’ was written with and produced by Ed Harcourt. The album is a beautifully reflective body of work, characterised by the band’s distinctive harmonies, evergreen folk rock melodies, and moments of riotous energy.

Country Squire - Tyler Childers (02/08/19)

  • Tracks: 9

‘Country Squire’ is the eagerly awaited follow-up to ‘Purgatory’ and the third album from Kentucky country singer-songwriter Tyler Childers. It’s full of rough-hewn honky-tonk and Americana along with great observations on Southern life. We love the attention to detail and his wonderful ability to draw you into the song.

Tyler is rapidly gaining the recognition that he richly deserves. Not two years ago, he was another unknown wave of excellent country artists coming out of Kentucky. Born in Lawrence County and raised in Paintsville, he gigged around the area for years, eventually roping Johnny Cash’s engineer David Ferguson and friend/fellow Kentuckian Sturgill Simpson to produce his last album ‘Purgatory’. That album found an immediate fanbase, racked up startling streaming numbers and soon Tyler was opening for John Prine on the road and Margo Price at the Ryman.

‘Let It Roll’ is the excellent second album from Austin based Country Rock trio Midland. One thing that really stands out on the album is its wonderful production quality coupled with retro style Eagle’s harmonies and well written songs with memorable hooks.

Midland hark back to to the days of real Country Rock music and they have a great time doing it. Their songs are infectious and the trio ooze’s charisma. Penned by Jess Carson the opener and title track ‘Let It Roll’ puts their harmonies to the fore while providing an earworm melody. The rockier ‘21st Century Honky Tonk American Band’ moves them in a new direction. and is one of the highlights on the record.

As with their debut album ‘On the Rocks’, ‘Let It Roll’ showcases Midland’s versatility and strengths. The sumptuous ‘Cheatin’ Songs’ reference a trope of the Country music genre and it sounds wonderful. One of my favourite tracks ‘‘Put the Hurt On Me’ proves that the band are adept at stirring ballads as they are uptempo jams. Mark Wystrach’s vocal is so good on the track, showing a little more soul than we’ve heard in the past.

Elsewhere on the record the breezy ‘I Love You, Goodbye’ is destined to become a live favourite, ‘Cheatin’ By the Rules’ sounds like a lost gem from the golden age of Country music, and ‘Playboys’ pretty much sums up the band’s work hard, play hard ethos. Cameron Duddy takes the lead vocals on the dreamy ‘Lost in the Night’ while Jess Carson gets a chance to shine on album closer ‘Roll Away..

Another of my favourites on the album is ‘Every Song’s a Drinkin’ Song’ is almost the follow up to the bands breakthrough hit ‘Drinkin’ Problem’. The vocals are on point, the instrumentation is perfect, the harmonies are excellent and the bands personality drips from every single lyric.

Morganway was founded in 2016 by twin brothers Callum (vocals/bass) and Kieran Morgan (lead guitar), and genre-defying keyboard player Matt Brocklehurst. Their numbers quickly grew as their sound developed, with singer SJ Mortimer, whose growling vocals were a perfect complement to the Morgan brothers gritty guitar work, and fiddle player Nicole J Terry joining the ranks. On the choice of adding another lead instrument to the band, Callum explained that, "both Kieran and Nicole have very individual playing styles, and that combination allows their instruments to play off one another in quite distinctive ways, sometimes harmonising or in total contrast." The last member to officially join was drummer Ed Bullinger, whose diverse playing adds an urgent, yet tactful texture to the fray.

Inspired by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac and other classic guitar bands such as The Eagles, Morganway have quickly built a name for themselves on the UK live circuit. They have already received accolades from Radio 2's 'Whispering' Bob Harris, swathes of recognition from the country press, two nominations from the BCMA awards, support slots with The Shires and an Under The Apple Tree session. Peppered within their classic rock influences are aspects of country, Americana, pop and even bits of indie. Their ability to dance around genres yet keep a cohesive sound has been one of the principal reasons Morganway have such a captivating live show.
